At this point centers the large trade of the two valleys, and as a consequence there are several business establishments here which are prosperous. This section is attracting the attention of settlers as being a most inviting portion of the country. ROHNERVILLE Rohnerville is a town of growing importance, pleasantly situated near the foot hills in the rich Eel River Valley, about one mile east from the river. It has a large and thriving business community, who derive a large trade from the rich and fertile district in which Rohnerville is located. There are many fine farms and orchards in the neighborhood of the town. The Herald is a bright newsy journal, published here by Mr. Chas. E. Gordon. The Ninth District Agricultural Fair Association holds its annual meetings and exhibits at Rohnerville, it has fine grounds, pavilion and race-course. The Eel River and Eureka Railroad is about one mile from the town. Besides farming, there are fine timber lands in this section, and a saw mill is located here. The town derives its name from Mr. Henry Rohner, a pioneer of the county. FORTUNA About twelve miles from Eel river bar, and one-half mile from that stream is Fortuna (Springville), which owes its existence mainly to the lumber interests in the vicinity. In the immediate neighborhood are fine farming lands. It is one of the youngest communities in the county, and is fast forging ahead. It is situated on the line of the E. R. & E. R. R. Fortuna (Springville) had taken its name from the numerous springs in the locality in which it is situated. The name was afterwards changed to Slide and more recently to that of Fortuna. The central location of the town and the surrounding resources will bring Fortuna to the fore as a great manufacturing town. Fortuna is fully abreast of the times in the journalistic line. The Eel River Valley Advance, published by Leon F. Stinson, occupies a leading position among the papers issued north of San Francisco. ALTON Is situated about twenty-four miles south of Eureka, on the line of the E. R. & E. and the junction of the P. L. Co. R. Rs. Alton (Junction) is the infant town of Humboldt, and is destined to gain a leading position in the county's traffic and commerce. Its position is commendable. It is the key town to the richest section and fruit belt of southern Humboldt--the South Fork of Eel River. The surrounding country affords excellent opportunities for employment. The dairy interest is of great importance. It has one of the finest creameries in the county, Frank W. Luther, the enterprising and senior member of the mercantile house of F. W.
