Mathews [ad] HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES 175 SOCIETY OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY PIONEERS [Drawing of male pioneer not included.] WAS organized January 22, 1876; re-organized and incorporated May 12, 1881. The first officers of the society were: President, A. J. Huestis; Vice-Presidents, James Hanna, Byron Deming, J. E. Wyman; Treasurer, R. W. Brett; Secretary, E. H. Howard; Marshal, C. W. Long; and the following Board of Directors: Jos. Russ, C. S. Ricks, I. Cullberg, Geo. Graham, F. S. Duff, A. Brizard. The first appearance of the Pioneers in public was July, 4, 1876, when for the first time they unfurled their beautiful banner. On one side it represented Pioneer life, and on the other side the motto per tot discrimina rerum. The new constitution and Articles of Incorporation were adopted May 12, 1881, and the following officers elected: President, John Vance; Vice-Presidents, A. Wiley, J. H. Dungan, C. W. Long; Secretary, W. F. Huestis; Treasurer, J. S. Murray, Jr.; Marshal, Geo. H. Tilley; and the following Board of Directors: James Hanna, E. H. Howard, Jos. Russ, John H. Kimball, Geo. Graham, Isaac Minor, J. A. Whaley. It should not be forgotten that we owe these beautiful valleys, these glorious hillsides, these magnificent forests, these running streams, these diversified occupations and climates, and these manifold resources, to that grand and conquering army of explorers, who have under all trials and vicissitudes of life, laid the foundation of all our present prosperous and grand institutions. Their sagacity, energy and enterprise have beautified the west end addition of the West of this Great Republic. The glories of these Pioneers should be engrafted upon the youth in and out of school. The inheritors of this beautiful and hard- earned prize must never relax their sense of admiration and appreciation. Pioneers of Humboldt County, Gratitude, Veneration and Love is the highest monument we can erect to your cherished memory. HUMBOLDT COUNTY NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISES THE Humboldt Times was established at Eureka in September, 1854, by Mr. E. D. Coleman. Mr. Coleman moved the Times to Union (now Arcata) December, 1854. In December, 1855, Mr. Coleman sold out the Times to W. Van Dyke and A. Wiley. In January, 1858, Mr. Van Dyke transferred his interest to Mr. Wiley. In August, 1858, Mr. Wiley moved the Times back to Eureka. In June, 1860, Mr. Wiley sold the Times to W. Van Dyke and L. M. Burson. The Northern Californian was established in December, 1858, S. G.
