The scenery is grand and picturesque, and for the suffering and ailing the remedies from nature's own labratory are here provided, which if they do not effect a cure will at least afford a relief. Hunting and fishing abound plentifully. This is one of the gem retreats of California for recuperation and rest. EUREKA FOUNDRY AND MACHINE SHOP Among the important industries of Humboldt, the Eureka Foundry and Machine Shop occupies a deserved prominence. It is one of the fixed institutions of the county, and fills a very necesssary and beneficial position; surrounded as it is by mills and manufactories on every side. In point of thorough equipment and preparation for the dispatch of all business, either in the way of new work or of repairing, this establishment is on a par with any shop of larger cities. This fact is becoming thoroughly appreciated by the mill and factory owners of this section, who are placing most of their orders with these works. The success that attends this establishment is entirely due to the energy of Messrs. N. H. and S. F. Pine, proprietors. Of these gentlemen the former is the practical business manager, while Mr. S. F. Pine, who is the well-known and popular dairyman of Bucksport, is a silent partner. Mr. N. H. Pine is a practical molder and a man of extended experience. In the three years that he has been running the Eureka Foundry and Machine Shop he has built up a large and lucrative business co-extensive with this section of the state. He keeps from fifteen to twenty skilled and reliable mechanics constantly at work in the different departments, and the firm has attained a high reputation for superior workmanship and promptitude. Mr. Pine has won for himself confidential business relations and social popularity. He has held the position of Councilman for the Second Ward of Eureka, where his executive abilities were favorably displayed. He is a native of the Green Mountain State--Vermont-- (a State, only three times as large as Humboldt). The youthful Pine desired more room. The fame of Bodie and its mammoth enterprises induced him to cast his lot with the Christian-spirited denizens of that progressive community. After placing the Bodie factories in running gear he land in Reno, from Reno to San Francisco, and finally to Humboldt. Here he cast a plant that has proven successful beyond expectation. Since Mr. Pine has taken possession of this institution he has worked a perfect revolution. New machinery and accessories of the most improved make have been procured. One or two that deserves special mention are a large drill press and a turning lathe, etc. The premises have been enlarged, the buildings have been prepared more commodiously to facilitate the increasing business. To assist in forming an idea of the magnitude of the business, it will only be necessary to state that about sixteen tons of castings per month are turned out. The writer had the pleasure of a personal inspection of the plant, and while it needs no irrigation to perpetuate its growth, it nevertheless requires the sweat of much honest toil to gather the reward.
