C., 1898-99; with ex- ploring expedition in South Africa, 1899; war correspondent during Boer War for New York Journal, Harper's Monthly and Harper's Weekly; hon- ored for distinguished service to press by Sir Alfred Milner, British High Commissioner for So. Africa; pres. Steyn of Orange Free States, and Pres.
