Youth spent on his father's farm near Toronto; worked at saddle and harness making in Toronto, Ont., Canada and St. Louis, Mo., 1852-56; steamboat steward Mississippi River steamboats running from St. Louis to New Orleans, 1857- 58; when the steamboat Pennsylvania blew up June 13, 1858, eighty miles below Memphis, on the Mississippi River, 740 people aboard, with a skiff he rescued alone and unaided thir- teen of the total forty-four survivors of the wreck; taught school in St. Francis co., Mo., part of 1860; manu- factured stoneware and drain tile, Whitehall, Ill.; principal of public schools, Mason City, Ill., 1869-71; dir. and mgr. W. Woodward built Windom Smelter at Ouray, Colo., in 1878 and was vice-pres. and genl. mgr. of company operating same; built Elgin Smelting Works at Leadville, Colo., in 1879 and was mgr. of company operat- ing same; pres. and genl. mgr. Shields Mining & Milling Co., Leadville, Colo., 1880-81; built Battle Mountain smelter at Red Cliffe, Colo., 1880 and was mgr. of same until 1882; moved to Los Angeles in 1882; engaged in real es- tate business under firm name of Tonner & Garbutt in 1887; in 1887 in connection with associates pur- chased San Jose Rancho, where Pacific Coast Soldiers' Home now stands, and was instrumental in se- curing from the Federal Government location of this institution on its present site against twenty-one other competing locations from San Francisco to San Diego, inclusive; was secy. and mgr. of the corporation and later sub-divided the first 12,000 *** end ***
