Los Angeles; office Equitable Bank Bldg., Los Angeles, Cal. Born in Brooklyn, N. Y., March 17, 1861; son of John Proctor and Marie (Laramie) Gregson. Attended the public schools of Cairo, Ill., until thirteen years of age, when he entered the Illinois Central Railway at Cairo as messen- ger which position he held one year. Studied telegraphy during this period and became operator and station agent for this road; from that time until 1887 occupied various positions with different railroads and gained a practical knowledge of all branches of railroad work. Moved to Los Angeles, Cal., in 1887 and was employed by the Southern California Railway; remained with this corporation eleven years; in 1898 was appointed chief clerk of the traffic dept. of the Santa Fe Railroad at Los Angeles; held this position for ten years; in 1908 was elected to present position. Has been prominently identified with the com- mercial development of the city. Member Transportation Committee, Chamber of Commerce. GRIDER, Leroy M. Wholesale and retail dealer in birds and pet animals. Res. 1160 E. Pico; offices 216 Mercantile Place, and Pico and Central Ave., Los Angeles, Cal. Born in Roseville, Sacrarttcnto Co., Cal., Sept. 22, 1854. Received a public school education. Moved to Los Angeles with his parents in 1857; first engaged in real estate business in Los Angeles and Downey, 1886; oper- ated as L. M. Grider & Co., the firm later becoming Newton, Grider & Bunch; another change made it Grider & Dow; in 1902 it was Grider & Hamilton, and still later the Grider, Hamilton, Oswald Co.; in 1898 he was a member of the fire commis- sion of Los Angeles, and in 1900 was elected to the City Council; upon re- tiring from the real estate business a few years ago his attention turned to birds and animals; the result was the opening of "Birdland," a whole- sale and retail establishment for the keep and sale of birds and animals from all over the world. A., 1900; engaged in mining in Andes mountains, 1901- 03; returned to Colo. and engaged in mining in Cripple Creek until 1905; operated Wild West Show throughout North and South America, 1906-08; engaged in mining in Rawhide, Nev., 1908-09; sold his Rawhide mining property, 1909, for $70,000, and pur- chased La Paz mines in Yuma Co., Ariz., for $35,000 in 1910.
