At- tended public schools of St. Louis, Mo. Engaged in farming until 21; clerk in general store of his brother- in-law, J. C. Brand, at Florissant, near St. Louis; resigned and formed partnership with Dan Rose and Charles Castello, in 1859, for purchase of a stock of goods for Pike's Peak; reached Denver June 10, and stored goods, as there was no satisfactory market; mined in Central Gulch, 1859; sold interest to Rose and returned to his home in Mo.; employed by N. M. R. R.; resumed commercial life and continued until 1862; left business in agent's hands and entered Confederate service in Civil War; lost right arm at battle of Moore's Mills; after close of war resumed commercial activities and continued until 1874; served as clerk of Circuit Court of Randolph Co., Mo., 1874-82; moved to San Jose, Cal., in 1883; to Los Angeles in 1885; in business 1885-95; elected city clerk 1896; served six years (three terms); with Title Guarantee & Trust Co. as treas. and asst. secy. four years; elected city treas. 1907; appointed by Mayor for four years, Jan., 1912. Born in Webster Parish, La., Sept. 23, 1866; son of Charles L. and Elizabeth (Radcliff) Hardy; married to Emily Giffen in 1888; widower. Educated in the law dept., Univ. of Texas; post- graduate dept., Chicago Law School, LL.B., LL.M. and D.C.L. from Chicago Law School and Illinois College of Law. Admitted to the bar at the age of nineteen years, having prev- iously studied law for three years. Practiced law in Texas, 1886-93; in Illinois, 1893-1909. Moved to Los Angeles, Cal., in 1910 and engaged in the practice of his profession which he has continued to date. While a resi- dent of Texas was made vice-presi- dent of the Texas State Fair; also prominently identified with the devel- opment of Texas. In Illinois general counsel for the Supreme Lodge Knights of Pythias and counsel for fifteen other insurance and fraternal societies; specializes in corporation law.
