En- gaged in life insurance business after graduation, and was later made of- ficer of his company, with headquar- ters in New York City; continued this work for 11 years; made speech at banquet of Athletic Club in Chicago, denouncing graft and extravagant management of big life insurance companies; associated with John Brisbane Walker, owner of Cosmopolitan mazagine, engaged in the manufacture of automobiles; moved to San Francisco as Coast representa- tive for the Mobile Co. of America; placed first large automobiles in pub- lic service in San Francisco and Los Angeles in 1901; moved to Los Angeles in 1904 as manager of Western Motor Car Co., and became interested in building as a side issue; remained with Western Motor Car Co. until 1909; has been devoting his time to building "Hartigan Houses;" designs all his houses, supervising every de- tail with the special purpose of pro- moting efficiency in housekeeping; often acts as representative of people who wish to build but do not care to deal personally with contractors. Upon the departure of Bishop Montgomery from Los Angeles, he was appointed administrator of the Diocese of Los Angeles by Archbishop Riordon, which office he held until the arrival of Bishop Conaty in 1903; appointed Domestic Prelate of the Pope, with the title of Monsignor, and received honorary LL.
