Attended private school of his father, who was a teacher, and was prepared for high school at Vienna, Austria, and later the Seminary; pursued study of Hebrew and theology under tuition of Vienese Rabbis; came to America in 1867 and continued studies. First charge was in Montgomery, Ala., where he remained 12 years; called to Milwaukee and Galveston, Tex., simultaneously; went to Milwaukee and remained 12 years; moved to Los Angeles, Cal., in 1899, taking charge of Temple B'nai B'rith as its Rabbi, continuing to date. While in Montgomery, Ala., published "Post-Biblical-History of the Jews." in recognition of which the Univ. of Alabama conferred upon him D.D.; rewrote and enlarged book ten years later, and subsequent editions were brought out; this work is widely in use in Sabbath Schools throughout the country.
