In partnership with father in general contracting, Indianapolis, Ind., 1884; in business for himself 1885; constructed part of Indiana Coal Road, Chicago to Brazil, Ind., 1885; part of Cincinnati, Jackson & Mackinaw Ry. in Ohio, 1886; part of Santa Fe Railway, on line from Chicago to Kansas City, 1887; con- structed branch line for Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Ry., to Findlay, O., and also part of the Findlay Water Works, 1888. During 1888-89 or- ganized Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo Ry. and purchased the Brantford, Waterloo & Lake Erie Ry., and, in connection with James N. Young of Chicago, and A. G. Yates, former pres. of Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Ry., financed these properties, which are now controlled by Canadian Pacific Ry. and N. Y. Central. Contract with N. Y. Central was ne- gotiated by himself with Cornelius Vanderbilt, Charles F. Cox, vice-pres. of Canada Southern Ry., and Mr. Ledyard, pres. of Michigan Central Ry.; financed some of contractors on Kentucky Central Ry. and purchased control of Columbus, Lima & Southwestern Ry. (Ohio), 1892; later dis- posed of same; aided in financing large tract of coal and iron property in Tennessee, 1893-94, and later built a railway through the property; financed several contractors on branch line of Mexican Central Ry., 1895-96; aided owners of Cape Cod Canal (Mass.) project; and financed a num- ber of parties interested in Dawson country during Klondike excitement, *** end ***
