Early life spent on farm; engaged in general merchandise business on his own account, 1885-90; banking business in Mo., 1890-92; moved to Colorado where he entered the employ of a manufacturing con- cern in 1892; moved to Southeastern Arizona and established banking houses at Safford and Globe; sold out his Arizona interests and moved to Redlands, Cal., 1900; became inter- ested in Imperial Valley shortly after arrival in Redlands and began work of its development; has been prom- inently identified with the develop- ment of this section of Cal.; began building railroad through Imperial Valley, and before its completion it was purchased by the Southern Pacific Co.; organized five banks in the five principal towns of Imperial Valley; also led in organization of nu- merous business enterprises, including telephone company, and was instru- mental in construction of a telephone system throughout the valley; started several newspapers; established sev- eral dairies; built creameries and a number of packing houses throughout Imperial Valley; as this section of the country grew in population, he in- stalled other utilities including Holton Inter-Urban Railway, electric light plants in the five leading towns of the valley, gas and power plants, ade- quate water systems; laid out and supervised construction of fine sys- tem of highways; owner of extensive agricultural lands in Imperial Valley; has also operated on large scale in Palo Verde and Coachella valleys where he is heavily interested in real estate. HOLTON, George L. Oil producer and refiner; horticulturist. Res. 3315 N. Broadway; office 510 Douglas Bldg., Los Angeles, Cal. Born in Northfield, Mass., Feb. 22, 1863; son of John P. and Stella M. Tyler Holton. Married to Fannie L. Pratt in 1885. Educated in the public schools. After leaving school accepted a posi- tion with the Remington Arms Co., New York City, which he retained three years; appointed Supt. of Farms, Mt. Herman School for Boys, Northfield, Mass., in 1882, and continued this work until he located in Crafton, Cal., in 1884; was one of the found- ers of Redlands, Cal., and was en- gaged in orange growing, nursery and irrigation enterprises, 1884-1894. Moved to Los Angeles in 1894 and has since been identified with the oil business as producer and refiner. Pres. and mgr.
