Y., Feb. 27, 1850; son of Solon and Harriet (Saunders) Huntington. Educated in public and private schools of his native town. Employed in hardware store in Oneonta, N. Y.; with large hardware firm in New York City for a number of years; in lumbering and lumber manu- facturing in St. Albans, W. Va., six years; supt. of construction of Huntington lines, then building from Louisville to New Orleans, known as Chesapeake, Ohio & Southwestern, 1884; receiver of same company, 1885; vice-pres. and gen. mgr. Ky. Central Ry., 1886-90; vice- pres. and gen. mgr. Elizabethtown, Lexington & Big Sandy, and Ohio Valley Rys., 1890-92; asst. to pres. So. Pacific, 1892-1900; second vice-pres. same, 1900; first vice-pres. same; moved to San Francisco. Cal., and acquired San Francisco street railways; sold this property in 1898, and began to buy Los Angeles street railroads; bought up all com- peting lines, until he was sole owner of system; bought an existing electric line to Pasadena, incorporated it under name of Pacific Electric; constructed tracks to outlying districts; bought up and built Los Angeles Interurban Railway, Los Angeles & Redondo Railway, San Bernardino Valley Traction Co., San Bernardino Interurban, Redlands Central, and Riverside & Arlington; planned to unite district from San Diego to Santa Barbara with electric lines, but sold out to Southern Pacific.
