Educated in the public schools of his native town and Wyoming Seminary of Kingston, Pa. Left school in 1874 to work for his father, who owned the Phoenix Coal Co. of Pittston, Pa.; father sold out two years afterward, but he was employed by the new firm, which continued business under the orig- inal incorporated name; at age of nine- teen he was made superintendent of the mines, which position he held two years. Moved to Denver, Colo., in Jan. 1880, and was employed as accountant with Brown & Kiefer. Moved to Los Angeles, Cal., in 1887, and went into busi- ness for himself, which he has enlarged and conducts at present. Has for ten years been a member of Merchants' and Manufacturers' Assn., and was elected pres. Jan. 18, 1912.
