In 1882 entered grain and live stock business at Cropsey, Ill.; sold out in 1885 and moved to Montana; bought horse ranch 30 miles from Helena; sold out one year later and moved to Townsend, Mont.; conducted gen- eral merchandise store, 1886-1895; also two branch stores in mining camps part of this time; sold out and moved to Los Angeles, Cal., 1895; engaged in real estate and street im- provement work in city of Los Angeles; in 1902 became associated with A. R. Fraser and H. R. Gage and pur- chased from Mrs. T. H. Dudley one- half interest in 180 acres ocean frontage, now known as Ocean Park and a portion of Venice, which was subdivided and sold, the first year's sales amounting to $1,000,000; in 1904 80 acres were bought from Recreation Gun Club, subdivided and sold; during this time the firm built Casino at Pier ave. and Ocean Front, also Ocean Park Bath House, Auditorium and Masonic Temple. In 1907 Mr. Jones purchased two unimproved sections of land in Imperial Valley; in three years improved the entire section near Holtville, fencing and cross fencing it in alfalfa and build- ing a reservoir with pipes running to cement troughs on each of 40 acres; sold this ranch in 1912 for $130,000. Lost heavily in great Ocean Park fire on Sept. 3, 1912, namely, Marine Apts., Casino and Bowling Alley; be- gan immediately to build a large re- enforced concrete hotel, strictly fire- proof, costing when complete over a quarter million dollars. Born at The Hay, Herefordshire, Eng., January 27, 1829. Moved to America when a child. Educated in public schools of Cleveland, O., and by private tutors. Engaged in banking in Cleveland; moved to California in 1850 and be- came interested in San Vicente Rancho near Santa Monica, where he made his home in 1875; engaged in mining during great gold production of 1850-60; with Col. R. S. Baker con- structed a wharf and started a rail- road from Rancho San Vicente in- tended to reach Salt Lake; forty years later Senator Clark matured the plan and built the Salt Lake Railroad; elected to the U.
