Normal School, 1878-81; left school before graduating to study telegraphy in the Western School of Telegraphy at Janesville, Wis. Engaged as telegraph operator and R. R. agent for the G. B. W. & St. P. Ry. at Dexterville, Wis., 1882-85; freight and ticket agent for the Northern Pacific Ry., 1885-95; during this time he was stationed at the follow- ing points in Montana: Bearmouth, Helena, Garrison, Rimini, Elliston and Phillipsburg. Rapidly promoted during connection with N. P. R. R.; moved to Los Angeles in 1895 and purchased a half interest in the art firm of McClellan, Jr., & Co., which was incorporated in 1905, and called the McClellan-Kanst Co. Succeeded to the presidency of this concern and in 1911 bought out all the stockholders; now conducts the business under the name of the Kanst Art Gallery.
