S. and was engaged to translate for Pres. Grant a history of the Civil War, written by Comte de Paris; became member of tobacco firm in New York City, and while in Turkey for this firm in 1875, witnessed mas- sacre of the Bulgarians in Salonica; started on tour of the world in 1877; remained in Egypt a year; moved to California in 1880 and engaged in citrus fruit growing near Sierra Madre; with Helen Hunt Jackson was appointed commissioner to report upon the needs of the So. Cal. Indians, and the report made induced the U. S. Government to help them; instrumental in having reservation plan abandoned, and lands allotted to heads of Indian families; chairman of state board of forestry; in charge of first survey of forest reserves, 1884-87; appointed by Gov. Budd member of the Yosemite commission in 1897; well known throughout state as principal factor in development of Venice, Cal.; established public libraries in Santa Monica and Pasadena; for two years maintained a reading room at Soldier's Home, Sawtelle. Engaged in farming in Ireland, 1868-81; justice of the peace, County Cork, Ireland; moved to Manitoba and engaged in farming and real estate, 1881-1900; moved to Cal. and engaged in farming in Chino valley, 1900-08; established stock and bond business in 1908, which he continues to date.
