Began work as an apprentice for the Lemon Pure Aluminum Co. of Lamont, Ill., in 1895; bench hand with the Brekenbridge Bicycle Lamp works, Toledo, O., 1896-98; with the Enterprise Brass Co., St. Louis, Mo., 1899-1900; with the Missouri Lamp works, St. Louis, Mo., handling all kinds of brass, working machinery, tool making, fox lathes, screw machines, etc., 1900-05; with Security Register Co., St. Louis, 1905-07; with Dorris Motor Car Co., St. Louis, Mo., 1907-10. Moved to Los Angeles in 1911 and established the Main Brass Co., of which he is now secy; whole- sale and retail dealers in brass and metal spinnings, brass finishing, polishing, electric plating, gas and electric fixtures. Born in Evansville, Ind., Jan. 9, 1882; son of Joseph Millard and Anna Elizabeth (Bierbower) Overell. Married to Grace Brizius in 1904. Attended grammar and high schools of Evansville, Ind.; took business course at Evansville High School. Moved to Los Angeles, Cal., 1899; engaged in furniture busi- ness, under firm name of Louden & Overell, 1902; partnership dissolved when stock was destroyed by fire; in business under own name; annexed adjoining building, owing to increase of business, 1904; moved to present address, and formed close corporation, 1906; took over active management, 1910. Vice-pres. and gent. mgr. of firm. 1910 to date; third sergeant, Troop D, Cal. N. G., three years; firm has membership in Chamber of Commerce and in Chamber of Mines and Oils. OWEN, Edward Hopson. U. Married to Cecelia A. Williams. Educated in private schools of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Univ. of Ala., graduating in 1863. Enlisted in Confederate army in 1864 as first sergeant of company C, 62d Ala. regiment; served until surrender of Gen. Lee's army in 1865, during which time he was severely wounded at battle of Blakely; captured by A. J. Smith's army and taken to Ship Island, Gulf of Mexico, where he was held pris- oner. After close of war engaged in cotton growing on his plantation in Ala. Moved west at time of building of U. P. & C. P. R. R.; prospected in several western states, and operated mines. Moved to Los Angeles, Cal., in 1870, where he has since resided. Deputy county clerk 14 years; ap- pointed clerk of U. S. District Court and U. S. Commissioner for southern district of Cal. in 1887, which office he held until Jan. 1, 1912. Col., adjt-genl. and chief of staff of Confederate Veterans of Pacific Coast, 1903-07. S., 1890; studied piano and theory with Mr. Ernest R. Kroeger in St. Louis, 1891-92; Oberlin Conservatory of Music, 1897-1900. Engaged in drug business in Westerfield, Ill., 1890-93; member of firm of M. G. & E. L. Owen, 1893-1902; founded Toledo Conservatory of Music, of which he was associ- ate dir. 1900-1903; moved to California in 1903 and engaged in private teaching of piano and musical theory, orchestra and band directing; supt. of music in San Diego high school, 1907-09; dir. music in National City school; supt. instrumental music in San Diego State Normal at present time; organist and dir.
