After leaving school was employed with the Baltimore & Ohio Railway at Columbus; held various po- sitions with this company, and was pro- moted several times; engaged in the hotel business in 1902; built the Clarendon Hotel, Seabreeze, Fla., catering to tourist trade; hotel destroyed by fire in 1909, and rebuilt in 1910; called New Hotel Clarendon. Moved to Los Angeles, Cal., June, 1910, and purchased the Van Nuys Hotel, at Fourth and Main sts., from Milo M. Potter; heavily in- terested in various large hotels through- out the country, but giving personal at- tention to the Clarendon, Seabreeze, Fla., and the Van Nuys. Pres. POTTER, Milo Milton. Hotel proprietor. Res. Potter Hotel, Santa Barbara, Cal.; office same. Born in Dundee, Munro co., Mich., May 19, 1854; son of Alfred and Betsy Ann (Hecock) Potter. Married to Nellie M. Jones. Prepared for college at Adrian, Mich.; graduated from Univ. of Mich., B. S., 1877; moved to Fla., and entered fruit business, which he followed for two years; cotton busi- ness, buying, ginning, and selling Long Island cotton for three years; built Potter Hotel, Crescent City, Fla., 1882; operated hotel three years, when it was totally destroyed by fire; moved to Atlantic City, 1885, and was manager of Congress Hall Hotel until 1888; with Bingham House, Philadelphia, Pa., 1888-89; moved to Los Angeles, Cal., 1889, and was mgr. of Westminster Hotel for seven years; during that time he built Van Nuys Hotel, which he operated for thirteen years; in 1902 built Potter Hotel at Santa Barbara, Cal., which he now *** end ***
