At nineteen moved West, driving ox team from Baraboo, Wis., to Denver, Colo. ; engaged in mining in Boulder and Gilpin counties, Colo.; in real estate and lumber business 1866-73; built first build- ing in Cheyenne, Wyo., in 1873; in real estate and lumber business in Denver and Leadville, Colo., 1873-77; one of early operators at Cripple Creek and the Great Telurum Camp; first discov- ered telurum in Boulder county, Colo., 1877-80; interested in politics in Colorado; moved to Los Angeles, Cal., 1882; lived at Santa Monica, Cal., 1882-86; represented Home and St. Paul Life Insurance Co. in Los Angeles 1886-87; with associates operated in real estate, mines and oil, 1886-90: organized and operated as owner. pres. and genl. mgr. properties in Mexico, Alamo, So.
