Attorney and banker. Res. 109 W. Ave. 54; office 1021 Title Ins. Bldg., Los Angeles. Born in Asheville, N. C., Sept. 29, 1846; son of James G. and Elizabeth Ann (Ball) Blackstock. Education in private schools was in- terrupted by the breaking out of the Civil War. Enlisted in the First S. C. Artillery (Regular) and served in Ft. Sumter from Feb. 22, 4862, for two years; serving until Charleston was evacuated in 1865; surrendered at Greensborough. Resumed education under private tutors after the war. Admitted to bar of all courts of Tennessee, 1869; same in Missouri, 1871; practiced his profession in Warrensburg, Mo., three and a half years; came to Los Angeles 1875, but soon after moved to Ventura, remaining there in his profession as member of firms of Blackstock & Shepherd, Blackstock & Ewing, and Blackstock & Orr, until 1906, when he returned to Los Angeles. Served as Railroad Commissioner from third district, 1898-1902; and as Bank Commission- er, 1905-1907; resigned to enter the Merchants Bank & Trust Co., serving as director, vice-pres. and trust of- ficer; resigned as trust officer, 1910, but still retains the other offices.
