April 4, 1849; son of William and Janet
(Thomson) Brown. Married to Amy
Edith Darrah in 1889. Educated in a
grammar school, Musselburgh, Scotland.
After leaving school served a four years'
apprenticeship in the offices of Maclain
& Hope, grain merchants, Leith, Scotland;
moved to San Francisco, May, 1871;
kept books for the Risdon Iron &
Locomotive Works for three years; took
charge of the office work for Hale Bros.
& Co., Stockton, Cal., and later for same
company at Sacramento; engaged in cat-
tle raising in Arizona in 1883; was elect-
ed to Thirteenth Legislature as assembly-
man from Yavapai county; engaged as
partner in dry goods business of Geo. N.
Hale & Co., San Diego, Cal., 1888,
bought general merchandise business of
H. T. Hewett, San Jacinto, 1890; sold
out and bought the Big Springs Ranch
at Hemet from Hancock Johnston, 1902;
made this his home for ten years when
he moved to Los Angeles. Interested in
property in Cal. and British Columbia;
for the past nine years has been pres. of
the Children's Home Soc. of Cal., in
which society he takes a deep interest.

Ont., 1854-5. Worked on a farm and
learned the saddle, harness and trunk
making business until 1855-60; moved
to Cal. in 1864; moved to Mich. in 1866
and entered the grocery business with
his brother; sold interest and engaged
in insurance business, 1869, under firm
name of Brown Bros. & Co., continu-
ing in this business until 1883, when
he returned to Cal.; in insurance busi-
[ness] in San Francisco, 1883-85; engaged in
ranching in Santa Barbara, 1885-87;
real estate business, Santa Barbara,
1887-89; moved to Los Angeles and
became manager of the National Life
Insurance Co.; became manager of
the Union Mutual Life Ins. Co. in
1893; organized Eagle Rock Bank in
1907, of which he is pres. to date;
later engaged in oil business. Pres.

cigar business, Kansas City, Mo.,
1899-01; went to South Africa during
Boer war; left New Orleans for Cape
Town, 1901; became sailor in Merchant
Marine, visiting nearly every port in
world; left sea as petty officer on U.S.A.
transport Sheridan in San Francisco,
1904; advertising and typewriter busi-
ness in San Francisco until earthquake,
1906; in theatrical work 1906-08; real
estate business in Bakersfield, Cal.; sub-
divided town of Waits in oil fields of
Kern Co.; promoted oil lands, colonies,
etc.; Real estate business in Los Angeles
1911 to date; was selling tract of
780 lots known as Maravilla Park; now
in partnership with L. M. Passmore in
the building and subdividing business,
at present operating in the Wilshire dis-
trict, promoting and building bungalows
for sale in the Silver Lake Terrace
Tract. Member L. A. Realty Board;
L. A. Chamber of Commerce; Auto
Club of Southern California. With two
other men, put on first big aviation meet
ever held in a small town. Jan. 19, 1910,
