After finishing his studies at Jena University served three years in Hamburg as apprentice in an importing and exporting house; leaving this firm was for a number of years with a large firm of shipping and forwarding agents op- erating in Hamburg, London and Paris. Then he came to the United States and for twenty years was a resident of Chicago; greater part of this time was spent in the employ of Morrison, Plummer & Co., wholesale druggists.
