Coronado st.; office Times Bldg., Los Angeles, Cal. Born near Dublin, Ireland, July 18, 1839; son of Richard and Ann (Ward) Burton. Attended country schools in Ireland until age of thirteen; night school, Glenham, N. Y., seven years; preparatory school connected with Racine College, Wis., 1858; Racine College, Wis., 1859-63, be- ing class valedictorian at his gradu- ation. Moved to America with his family and settled in Glenham, Dutchess co., N. Y., where he worked in a woolen factory seven years while at- tending night school. After gradua- tion from Racine College, taught in grammar school connected with that college three years. Moved to Cal., 1866; taught school in San Mateo, Redwood City, Fair Oaks and Los Angeles, Cal., and in Portland, Ore., 1866- 78; abandoned teaching on account of his health and moved to San Francisco, where he engaged in newspaper work; with others, purchased Howard Ranch of about 640 acres, at San Gabriel Cal., 1880, and engaged in farm- ing for three years; disposed of farm and moved to Los Angeles, where he became reporter on Evening Express; established large printing office in Los Angeles; gave this up on account of failing health; engaged in newspaper work on the Herald, which he con- tinued until 1889; established weekly paper of his own in Los Angeles, 1889; purchased "Grocer and Country Merchant," a weekly trade paper in San Francisco, 1892, which he conducted for four years; moved to Los Angeles and purchased Commercial Bulletin, which he conducted successfully in connection with general newspaper work; disposing of this, he became a member of Los Angeles Times editorial staff, which work he continues to date, being still engaged in active work on the Bulletin; has made two trips through western Europe of year's duration each, for the Times; pub- lished volume of essays from his news- paper work, and volume of letters from Europe covering first trip.
