Began work in a coal mine in Illinois at the age of ten years, where he remained until he was eighteen years old; at the age of eighteen went to St. Louis and served apprenticeship in the boiler maker's trade with Rowan Bros.; in the employ of the C., B. & Q., Galesburg, Ill., 1878-80; with Hannibal & St. Joseph R. R., 1887; with the Cotton Belt R. R., 1890; with Santa Fe, Prescott & Phoenix R. R., 1892-95; built the Congress R. R. from Congress to Congress Junction, Ariz., 1895-99; engaged in general mining in Arizona and California, and located Clara gold and copper mines which are now the Swansea gold and copper mines; operated with a 750- ton smelter; still owns a large part of stock of this corporation.
