ness; alone in grocery business, 1873-
76; engaged in the publication of his-
tories in 1876; moved to Cal. in 1894,
and engaged in orange culture; one
of the largest individual orange grow-
ers in So. Cal. Pres. Chapman Bros.

Wyoming and Cal., 1870-98; Anti-
Saloon League supt. for Cal. since
April 1, 1898. Took active part in
Abraham Lincoln's first election, mak-
ing over 100 speeches in that notable
campaign and many more than that
number for his second election; was
