Three years' apprenticeship at carpen-
ter's trade; moved to California 1875;
worked at trade at San Fernando Tunnel
1876, in Modock mines in Inyo co.,
where he was employed two years by
Modock Mining Co.; moved from Modock
to Bodie, Mono co., then to Tombstone,
Ariz., 1879; worked for Contention
Mining Co. as timberman 1880;
promoted to asst. foreman; remained
with this company until the strike of
1884, when he accepted a similar position
with Copper Queen Co., (later Copper
Queen Consolidated Mining Co.) ; pro-
moted to general foreman, and later to
Mine Supt.; remained with this com-
pany over 23 years. Has since resided
in Los Angeles. Member Knickerbocker
Club of L A.; member Masonic
fraternity, 32nd degree; B. P. O. E.

CLAYTON, Cassius Henry.

Clayton; married to Susan A. E. Smith

University. Moved to Denver in 1869 and
was employed as foreman carpenter on
large buildings until 1874, when he
moved to Cal.; employed by Murphy
Bros. as supt. of sawmill in Sonoma Co.,
Cal., 1877-82; lumber salesman, 1882-
87; engaged in contracting and building,
1887-90; postmaster and justice of the
peace, Lang, Cal., and ranching, 1890-
1902; mgr. Madary's Supply House,
1902 to date. Served seven years in
National Guards of Colo. and Cal. One of
the best informed apiarists on Pacific
Coast, being an expert in every depart-
ment of the business. Superintended
construction of first business block with
an iron front in Denver, Colo., 1873-74;
organized and was first pres. of
Federated Imp. Assn. of Los Angeles, 1904.
