California Death Index. State of California Department of Health, Sacramento, CA, microfiche, 1905-1990. The California Death Index is a primary source for finding the date of death of persons who died in California since 1905. This index starting with 1940 is available at most libraries on microfiche. The index from 1905 to 1939 can be seen in bound books at the California State Library in Sacramento. Some Family History Center libraries have the microfilm version of the 1905 to 1939 index.
Each set covers ten years. The names are listed alphabetically by surname. Other information given includes sex, spouse's initials, social security number, date of death, place of death as a county number code, registrar number, and state file number. Older versions of the 1960-69 index include the mother's maiden name.
