California County Recorder Office Survey. Betty Stevenson and Thea Roberts, California State Genealogical Alliance, Special Publication 1, 1984-1985. The information in this book will be useful to anyone planning to do research at the county records office. In 1984, the authors sent survey forms to 58 county records offices in California requesting information about the availability of vital records and indexes to researchers. All responded except five counties: Merced, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, Shasta, and Tuolumne. Because the book is over ten years old, some of the information may have changed, such as the fees charged for searching and requesting copies. The county records offices are by arranged in alphabetical order by county. The information given for each office included the following:
Some offices did not have any State-Wide Indexes listed. With this book, precious time can be saved by knowing what records are available for researchers before making the trip to the county records office.
