Northern California Marriage Index 1850-1860. Nancy J. Morebeck, Vacaville, CA, 1993. This marriage index covers 23 counties in Northern California and contains 4,500 marriages. The counties are Butte, Colusa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Humboldt, Klamath, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Yolo, and Yuba. Notice that the now extinct Klamath County was listed, which now is in part of Del Norte and Siskiyou counties. Note also that Glenn, Lake, Lassen, and Modoc counties were the remaining Northern California counties not included in this compilation. This compilation expanded on the earlier work done by Keith Lingenfelter and Robert Fulton "Northern California Marriages 1850-1860," National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volume 54, which covered 17 counties. The sources of these marriages include county records, history books, newspapers, and personal compilations.
The names are arranged in alphabetical order, with the bride and groom crossed indexed for ease of use. The entries include surname, given name, name of spouse, county (in abbreviated codes), day or book and volume number, and year of marriage. For some entries where only book and volume number are given instead of day, the user will have to see the actual record to determine the day of marriage. An example of an entry looks like this:
MOSURE, Joel Cynthia M. HARRINGTON SAC A-77 1855
SAC is for Sacramento County, "A-77" is the book and volume number, "1855" is the year of marriage.
