From 1769 to 1846, the Spanish and Mexican governments granted 588 land grants encompassing 14,000 square miles in California. Shortly after the U.S. Government recognized the land grants, litigation over land ownership began to appear in the courts. These court records are available for researchers at the National Archives. This guide is an index to the land claim dockets on microfilm. The contents include the following:
