I saw this book on local census records in the local library and thought I'd share it in case some of our members may not be aware of it. The book is titled "State Census Records" by Ann S. Lainhart, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1992. This book lists the State Census Records for many States, including California. These are not Federal Census records. These are census records taken by the State, County, or City governments. The only State census record in California was taken in 1852, because the Federal census of 1850 did not include Contra Costa (including Alameda), San Francisco, and Santa Clara counties. This census is available at both the California State Library and the California State Archives. The book then lists the local census records that are housed on microfilm at the State Archives and at Family History Libraries.

There are 19 of them for different cities or townships in California, such as these for Northern California: Oakland (1902), Chico (1906), Richmond (1908), Red Bluff (1908), San Jose (1897), Greenview Township, Siskiyou Co. (1908), Scotts Valley Township, Santa Cruz Co. (1908). An example of a description would be like for Red Bluff, Tehama Co. (1908), "alphabetical order, typewritten, and contains name, age, sex, occupation, and street address." But most contain less information. The book next lists the local census records that are not microfilmed and can be found at the State Archives. There are 34 of these, including these in Northern Cal: Adin (1938), Albany (1926), Cedarville Township, Modoc Co. (1922), 3rd Judicial Township, Glenn Co. (1916), Pacific Grove (1926), Pittsburg (1918), Pittsburg (1922), Tulelake Township, Modoc Co. (1938), Watsonville (1912), Westwood Township, Lassen Co. (1916), and Woodland (1918). In the volumes of the Historical Society of Southern California Quarterly are early California padron censuses for 1790 for Los Angeles (v. 41, p. 181), The Royal Presidio of San Francisco (v. 41, p. 386), Santa Barbara (v. 42, p. 90), Monterey (v. 42, p. 210), and Presidio of San Diego (v. 43, p. 107). These give name, age, sex, marital status, occupation and nativity. There are also early mission censuses on microfilm at the State Archives for San Carlos (1796), San Luis Obispo (1797-98), Soledad (1798), and San Antonio (1798), which lists names and ages of mostly Indians.
