This book is not really an index. It's a history of the California Gold Rush as told by the diaries and letters of William Swain and supported by the diaries and letters of other argonauts. It was included here because of the bibliographic source in the back of the book. Anyone who had ancestors in California during the Gold Rush should consult this source. The diaries, journals, letters, narratives, and reminiscence of hundreds of argonauts are listed in three separate sections by subjects:

Section 1: Overland To California, 1849-1850;
Section 2: Life in the Mines and Cities, California, 1849-1851;
Section 3: Homeward Journey Via Panama, 1850-1851.

The names of argonauts are listed in alphabetical order. Following each name are listed the source (letter, journal, or diary, etc.), the year or years, the material type, and the abbreviated library or publication.

Here's an example:

Austin, Henry. Diary, 1849. MF: BL.

The "MF" is microfilm, and "BL" is the Bancroft Library.

This bibliography was not meant to be complete. But because it contains a large number of sources under one cover, it's a great place to begin a search for Gold Rush ancestors.
