We have had to begin over again, and at the start it is necessary to restore service gradually. While the main under-ground cables are practically intact, the feeder cables supplying the various districts have all been destroyed and our aerial wires and cables cut away where not destroyed. In restoring the service, it is necessary to test out all the lines, renew- ing those that have been destroyed, and opening up our switchboards which were not burned, in the Park and West offices, section by section, all of which will take time. Our New Main Exchange in the burnt district is now open and we shall be able to give service from that point. In presenting this telephone list we have included such subscribers in the Park, West and Butchertown districts as it has been possible to reach and those in the burnt district to whom we have been able to furnish ser- vice under temporary telephone numbers which are subject to change, and subscribers will please be governed accordingly. We shall issue telephone lists from time to time as the restoration of service advances. We believe you fully appreciate the great task that is ours to com- pletely restore our system, and we beg to assure you that nothing will be spared that will help us to accomplish full restoration at the earliest possi- ble date. We ask your co-operation and toleration with us during this period that we may all work together in the up-building of the greater and more prosperous San Francisco of the future.
