Church Records Guide
The following guide of San Francisco churches and their record holdings
was initially created from a publication prepared by the Work Projects
Administration (1) in May 1942. The information was
obviously out-of-date. But, at the least, it listed what records were
available
at the time and which may still exist.
If you have first-hand knowledge of where any of these records are
currently
located, or know of other Church Records, please contact
us, and we will update the entry for the church/temple/etc. on this
page.

Temple Emanu-El was founded in 1850.
-
Partial list of records:
-
Marriages: A slim book chronicling marriages performed by Rabbi
Herman M. Bien that date from 1856 to 1899. Also, a collection of
index
cards that record weddings from the 1920s (very few cards) up to the
1990s.
-
Cemeteries: Emanu-El administers three cemeteries: Home
of
Peace, Hills of Eternity, and Salem, all in
Colma.
Those records are kept at the cemetery offices which are not at the
Temple.
Although odd bits and pieces sometimes do show up in random boxes in
the
archive.
-
Religious school records starting in the late 1920s.
These
may include parents' names (and mother's maiden name), confirmation
date,
bar/bat mitzvah dates, the name of a student's public school, home
address,
and religious school sometimes even grades and teacher comments.
-
Rabbi Jacob Voorsanger's The Chronicles of Emanu-El, written
in
1900. This book includes the membership list for that year, and the
temple
officers for every year up until then.
-
Partial run from 1900 to the present of The Temple Chronicle,
a
congregational newsletter. A complete run exists elsewhere at Temple;
and,
partial run of The Scroll, a Religious School publication from
1913
to 1994.
-
Files of press clippings and miscellaneous biographical material
related
to some congregants.
-
