"It was during his stay in California, that [Max Leopold] Margolis met his future wife, Evelyn Kate Aronson, of San Francisco. They were married on June 20, 1906. Evelyn Aronson was a gifted, cultured woman who came from a prominent family. Among her descendants on her mother's side was Barry Goldwater. They had three children, Catherine, and the twins, Philip, and Max, Jr. Max, Jr. died of a stomach ailment during the family's visit to Palestine in 1924 where Margolis had come as the Annual Professor at the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem. Margolis' grief was profound; after returning to the United States he was said to have visited his son's grave every Shabbat for the rest of life, even in intemperate weather." —Arthur Kiron

"Evelyn Aronson Margolis was a gracious, distinguished, and well-respected lady, very active in Jewish community affairs. She was confident and assertive, but never unkind. She served on various boards, such as the Overseers of Gratz College, and the Hebrew Sunday School Society that was founded by Rebecca Gratz. She was a native of California, the relict of Professor Max Margolis, a well-known scholar who wrote a standard book on Jewish history with Professor Alexander Marx of the Jewish Theological Seminary. ...Evelyn and Max had two children, Catherine and Philip. Catherine had a short-lived marriage when she was young [and] lived with her mother in their apartment on Rittenhouse Square in downtown Philadelphia. After her mother's death, she married a Philadelphia physician by the name of Rubenstone. She had no children of her own. Philip was an accountant. ...Philip had a son Philip Jr.  ...Evelyn was a cousin of Senator Barry Goldwater, and she stayed in touch with him." —Alan D. Corré, 2005.
