Strange Mixtures
STRANGE MIXTURES.—In the negro dance houses along Kearny street
are found the strangest mixtures of humanity that the city can exhibit.
Here, among all shades, from the light mulatto to the coal black, wooly
headed negro, on whose face charcoal would be apt to make a white mark,
are found Mexicans, Chileans, Kanakas, Chinese, males and females, and
also some Americans., white men, who have descended so low as to become
the inmates of rowdy negroes. It is amusing, in passing by, in the evening,
to cast a glance at the interior of one of these houses.
