She Must Attend Chinese School

Dr. Wong Him's Daughter Cannot Study With the White Children.

Kittie Wong Him, the minor daughter of Dr. Wong Him, Chinese herb doctor, will have to attend the schools provided for the children of her race by the Board of Education. It was so decided yesterday when Judge Seawell denied Dr. Wong Him's application for a writ of mandate compelling the Board of Education to allow her to remain a pupil of the Clement Grammar School.

The presence of the bright little Chinese girl in the Clement School was strongly objected to by the parents of some of the white children attending there, and upon the parents' complaint the Board ordered her to attend the primary school provided for children of the Chinese quarter. Dr. Wong Him demurred on the ground that to legislate against his daughter's admission to the public schools was class legislation, and, furthermore, that as he did not reside in the Chinese quarter, his children ought not to be compelled to attend school so far from home. Judge Seawell held, however, that so long as the Board of Education had provided a school expressly for children of her race she must attend it.
