First
Principal - Joseph P. NOURSE, 1921 - 1936
Second Principal - Fred W. KOCH, 1936 - 1940 Third Principal - William A. WEILAND, 1940 - 1944 Fourth Principal - R.E. JOHNSON, 1944 - 1946 "STARS THAT GLITTER" Since the first pioneer class graduated, many Galileans have become famous and fulfilled their high school dreams. And Galileo, too, once an infant school, has provided many pleasant memories for its graduates through the years. Among the first to graduate from Galileo are famous journalists of today. Harrison WOOLEY, whose sports column for the Pendulum was often done in poetry, is now a radio sports commentator. Ira BLUE, who once wrote a letter to the Pendulum protesting he had to buy a student body card for his R.O.T.C. uniform as well as for his other clothes, is now an announcer for KGO. Ray LEAVITT, another by-line man, was also on the Pendulum staff. Joan Nourse MUZIO, formerly with the Chronicle, is now instructor in journalism at the S.F.J.C. Dick FRIENDLICH, who has a large following for his sports columns, was once business manager, then sports editor of the Pendulum. A former editor of the Telescope, Rosemarie MULLANY, is now at Washington writing for the A.P. Nathan Farbman, who once made the headlines of the school paper as Senior Class president, is now making the pages of Life magazine with his pictures of China and the Greek elections. With him is his Galileo wife, Patsy ENGLISH, a writer for teen-age magazines and other periodicals. Two graduates who have gained prominence in the world of medicine are Dr. Elnar BLACK, noted eye specialist, and Dr. Norman REED. Other Galileans who have achieved fame in San Francisco are Assessor Russ WOLDEN and Supervisor George CHRISTOPHER. Marshall DILL, history professor, has been asked to lecture at Cambridge University in England. Also history professors are Henry MADDEN and Burr OVERSTREET. In the world of music Galileo has contributed many important names. The most famous is that of Lina PAGLIUGHI, whose career sounds legendary. After hearing her sing, the great TETRAZZINI predicted that she would one day be one of the world's greatest singers. Lina then became a protegee of Madame TETRAZZINI and inherited the fiva's jewels. Also well known for their operatic work are JosephineTUMMINIA, at present with the Metropolitan Opera Company, and Lorraine CALCAGNO, with the San Carlo Opera Company. Here in San Francisco are two Galileo boys who played for dances in the girls' gym: Bill CLIFFORD, now starred at the Bal Tavarin, and Eddie FITZPATRICK, also an orchestra leader, now appearing in the Mural Room of the St. Francis. The Rev. Joseph DONDERO, S.J., newly ordained, will conduct solemn mass for the Catholic students of the graduating class. Dr. Harrison BROWN, a professor of physics, attracted the attention of the War Department because of his work with the cyclotron and was asked to join the other scientists at Oakridge, Tennessee, to work on the atomic bomb. One of the latest Galileo graduates to hit the spotlight and one to watch in the future, is Eugene DANASHER, who became editor of the Daily Californian. He was also selected as a commencement speaker and is now receiving his Ph.D. at Stanford. On the radio and on the screen we find the Vagabonds, who leader Al TORRIERI, first played for a Galileo rally at the age of 12. There are many othe Galileans to be mentioned also. There are those who gave their all as other Americans have done. There are those who have carried on their Galileo spirit of friendliness and cooperation to all walks of life. There are the present Galileans and those yet to come who will find their places in the world as those before them have done. |
