"HUDSON--In Melbourne, Australia, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Otto C. SCHUMACHER, Nov. 23, 1891, Harry HUDSON, aged 56 years. Death of Harry HUDSON -- The steamer Monowai which left Sydney, Australia, on Nov. 30th and arrived at San Francisco on Christmas day, brought a letter containing the sad news of the death of Harry HUDSON at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Otto C. SCHUMACHER, in Port Melbourne, Australia, Nov. 23, 1891, after an illness of nearly 4 weeks. The malady to which he succumbed was cancer of the stomach. Three skillful physicians attended him and everything possible was done to save him; but medical skill and kind nursing were of no avail. Mr. HUDSON went to Australia about a year ago and was followed by his son Bert a few months later, his wife and daughter Lena remaining in Salinas. On the 10th of Nov. Mrs. HUDSON received a cablegram from her son-in-law, Mr. SCHUMACHER, saying, "Husband ill -- come," and 2 days afterwards (Nov. 12th) she and her daughter Lena sailed from San Francisco for Australia on the steamer Alameda, cherishing the hope that the life of the loved one might be spared, at least until they could reach his bedside across the sea. But they were doomed to disappointment. The voyage would take nearly a month, and the spirit of Harry HUDSON winged its flight from earth when wife and daughter were 11 days out from San Francisco speeding across the broad Pacific as fast as the good ship Alameda could take them. Ere this their tears have fallen like rain on the mound neath which he sleeps. Harry HUDSON was a genial gentleman, a loving husband, an affectionate father and a true friend. The deceased was a member in good standing of Salinas Lodge, No. 204, F.&A.M. and the A.O.U.W., carrying a policy of $2000 in the latter order in favor of his wife. A host of friends here will drop a tear to his memory and deeply sympathise with the near and dear ones who mourn his departure to that "undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns." The remains had been embalmed at San Francisco and when the casket was opened were found to be present a very life like appearance. The casket was taken charge of by the Undertaker of this city and conveyed to the late residence of the deceased, where the remains were viewed by the heart broken family and relatives. The funeral took place on Tuesday at 9 A.M. from the Catholic Church, where a solemn mass of requiem was celebrated for the repose of his immortal soul. Notwithstanding the stormy weather, the rain fell in torrents, the church was crowded with the relatives and friends of the deceased, to take their last look and pay their respects to one who was a kind father, a good husband and a true friend. "HUMPHREY--Charles Franklin HUMPHREY--The death, after several month's illness of Charles Franklin HUMPHREY, well-known attorney of San Francisco, on Friday, the 17 August 1945, ends a vibrant and colorful personality of old San Francisco. His adventurous life began when his pioneer mother, forced to flee from marauding Indians, held the child for hours in her arms above a Kansas stream. His father, James C. HUMPHREY, established the first newspaper in Republic and Decatur Counties, Kansas. As a boy he worked as a printer's devil on the widely-quoted Belleville Telescope, owned and edited by his father, and founded by him in 1870. Later he earned his way through college as a reporter on the Kansas City Star and Topeka Capital, and was graduated by the University of Kansas, with the degree of L.L.B. After leaving college he practiced law for about a year in Portland, Oregon, under the late W. W. COTTON, brother of Judge Aylett R. COTTON of San Mateo County. In 1895 Mr. HUMPHREY moved to San Francisco, where with thirty-five cents in his pocket after furnishing his office, he began his long and able career in the law.

Never acknowledging defeat, all his cases were interesting to him all his clients "innocent victims" for whom he was a fiery partisan. In 1899 he married Miss Elizabeth WARREN, a native of England. Two sons, James W. HUMPHREY and Jack C. HUMPHREY, were born to them on Washington Street where they lived until widening interests took him to Europe, where he was instrumental in consolidating many of the California oil properties of Shell Oil Company. Subsequently business required him to make frequent trips to various parts of the world, but he always maintained his San Francisco law office as his headquarters. In 1919 he became interested in the agricultural possibilities of San Mateo County and purchased a large ranch which was a part of the Old Spanish Grant Punta del Ano Nuevo, near Pescadero, growing artichokes on a large scale and dairy cattle feed, and maintaining a herd of 500 dairy cows, which is said to be one of the largest herds in the state free form tuberculosis and Bang's disease. At the ranch, and at his Berkeley home Mr. HUMPHREY, being hospitable inclined and a jovial host spent many happy hours entertaining a wide circle of friends with stories of his experiences abroad and in old San Francisco. Recently he entertained with great pleasure a group of our wounded boys from Dibble General Hospital, and only last week was host to the "Queens Bench," an association of women lawyers of San Francisco. Mr. HUMPHREY was a member of the Bohemian Club for over fifty years, a life member of B.P.O. Elks, the Commonwealth Club, California State Chamber of Commerce and a director of Associated Farmers of California. He was a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of California, San Francisco Bar Association, Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, a trustee of the Kansas Pioneer Memorial Society, San Mateo County Historical Association and E Clampus Vitus. A 32 degree Mason, and a member of Knights Templar, Shrine and past patron of Golden Gate chapter of Eastern Star, he was signally honored in 1944 when he was presented with the Masonic Gold Button by Excelsior Lodge No. 166 F. & A. M., and in the same year Islam Temple, in recognition of his half century of membership in the Masonic order, dating back to April 17, 1893, at Laurence Lodge F. & A. M. No. 6. He is survived by his widow, Elizabeth W. HUMPHREY; a son, James W. HUMPHREY of Oakland; four grandchildren and a sister, Adela G. HAYNES of Mountain View. His younger son, Jack C. HUMPHREY, preceded him in death two years ago. Funeral Service were conducted by Excelsior Lodge No.166 F.& A.M. at 1:00 P.M. August 21st at the mortuary of Halstead & Co., 1123 Sutter St., near Polk, San Francisco." "HYMAN--Henry W. HYMAN--On the 26th of March, 1905, there died in San Francisco a man of sterling character, Henry W. HYMAN, with a host of friends who loved him for his goodness, and his great-hearted charity which was always given in a quiet way. Of a deeply religious nature, he kept much to himself, but it was only for the purpose of inward study that he did so. Prussia was the land of his birth, in the year 1842. His education was obtained in his native land. When he became a young man the spirit of pioneering caused him to journey to the United States and for a time he lived in Portland, Ore. Later he moved to the Hawaiin Islands, where he engaged in a mercantile business. He never really established a residence in the islands, but called San Francisco his home. Here he maintained offices connected with his business. Associated with him were his brothers and with their united effors and shrewdness the business developed to huge proportions. Four years before his death he retired. On the 3d of March, 1867, Miss Julia STODOLE became his wife. She was a woman of exceptional qualities, fine character and noble spirit. Her death took place in 1915. Henry HYMAN was a member of Temple Emanu-El and at one time a director of Mount Zion Hospital. He was also connected with the various Jewish charitable organizations and the work he did in association with them will be long felt and remembered. Seven children were born to this worthy man and his wife. Those surviving are: Mrs. Theresa STONE, Walter L. HYMAN, Samuel L. HYMAN, Mrs. Fred BARUCH and Robert H. HYMAN."
