THIRTY YEARS AGO.

A Notable Voyage of the Days of '49.

A notable voyage of the Days of Forty-nine was that of the ship "Orpheus," Captain Leander Freeman. She arrived at this port from New York, via Valparaiso, on the eighth of July, 1849; one hundred and ninety-six passengers, beside the crew, in all about two hundred and twenty men on board. They were all landed at this port without a death or an acident worth recording having occurred on board during the long voyage the "Horn Around." Captain Freeman, after more than forty years of continuous "life on the ocean wave," retired from the sea some six or seven years ago, and settled in San Francisco, where he is now of the business firm of Freeman & Baker, No. 118 Davis street. Some others of the Argonauts by the "Orpheus" are well known residents of this city; but of the majority the Captain might well ask "Where are they now?" Or he might say, with Ossian, and with almost appropriateness, "I came to the home of my childhood, and said, 'the friends of my youth, where are they,' and echo answered, 'where are they?' " Not even an echo comes back when the names of most of his passengers are called. Nor starboard, nor port watch "ahoy," can ever wake them more.

List of passengers per ship Orpheus, Leander Freeman, Master, from New York via Valparaiso; landed at San Francisco, July 8th, 1849. All well:
