California Bound by SFgenealogy

The web pages for California Bound were initially the work of John Ireland.
From 1999 to 2008, he has been posting these invaluable lists for researchers.
In 2008, he asked SFgenealogy to take them over, and we were thrilled to do so.

Ship Passenger Lists
Wagon Train Lists
Isthmus of Panama Passenger Information

This site contains passenger lists for ships and wagon trains traveling to California between 1848 and 1873. The lists are transcribed from microfilm of the New York Daily Times, the New York Herald, the New Orleans Picayune, the Panama Star, the Panama Herald, and the Boston Daily Evening Transcript. When possible, passengers will be linked to the ship they later boarded on the Pacific side of the Isthmus for the final leg of the journey to San Francisco.

Other major printed works that should be checked:
  • Louis J. Rasmussen's "San Francisco Passenger Lists," Vols. 1, 2, and 4, and "California Wagon Train Lists," Vol. 1. Rasmussen's books cover, roughly, 1850-1865 for ship lists and April 5, 1849, through October 20, 1852, for wagon train lists.
  • Peter E. Carr's "San Francisco Passenger Departures," Volumes 3 and 4, for passengers departing San Francisco for Central America, July 15, 1851, through June 16, 1852.
  • Libera Martina Spinazze's "INDEX to the ARGONAUTS of CALIFORNIA". "Argonauts of California," was published in 1890 and written by Charles Warren Haskins. It is a compilation of 27,000 names of California pioneers who entered the State prior to 1850. For a description, click HERE. Please read the IMPORTANT NOTES at the bottom of that page. (Charles Warren Haskins passenger listing on board ship America from New Bedford, MA)
Other recommended web sites:
  • MARITIME HERITAGE PROJECT. The MHP site contains an extensive collection of passenger lists from ships arriving at the Port of San Francisco during the California Gold Rush, Pacific Coast maritime history and California history. Passengers found departing the East Coast may also be found arriving in San Francisco on the Maritime Heritage Project passenger lists.
  • SHIPWRECKS DATABASE. The California State Lands Commission's California Shipwreck database.
  • EARLY AMERICAN SAILING SHIPS. Jerry Wilkinson's web pages with brief descriptions and pictures of a bark, ship, brig, sloop, barkentine, brigentine, schooner, etc.
