"DAVIS/ESTUDILLO--On Friday morning last
[19th?], at the Mission of Dolores, by the REV. PADRE PRUDENCIO SANTILIAN,
WILLIAM H. DAVIS Esq., to Miss MARIA J., Daughter of DON JOSE JOAQUIN
ESTUDILLO,
of this place. "The nuptials were celebrated on the evening of the same
day with considerable elcat. The escort, the banquest, and the "featly
dance," passed off the time with generous mirth and pleasantry. The new
and commodious house of Mr. W. H.
MERRILL, (to be known, we believe,
as the "American House,") was thrown open for the reception of a host of
friends, and how the kind entertainment was appreciated, half the town,
perhaps, can testify. How warmly we congratulated the happy newly wedded!
Joy to the bride and groom!
"Joy to the bride! she hath pledged
"At the shrine where her heart hath bowed.
"She has given the faith of that stainless hand,
"To the heart where affection glowed;
"And they need not scoff at the name of Love.
"Nor drown on its offered flowers,
"For the sun that lights up the world above,
"I have seen it smile on ours.
"Joy to the bridge, the heartless
"May frown from their giddy height,---
While the soul looks on its cynosure,
"They never can dim its light,
"When the world's dark hand is raised in wrath
"O'er the loved one at her side,
"O, who should smile on his darkened oath
"But her he hath called his bride."

"DAVIS/LAMB--San Ardo Lovers Elope -- The
San Francisco Chronicle of last Saturday contained the following: "Pretty
Louise
LAMB left her home in San Ardo, Monterey county, last Monday,
accompanied by Miss Maria HEALION, ostensibly for a visit to the
latter's home at Tocaloma in Marin county. She will never reach Marin county
as Miss LAMB. On the train coming up was a strapping young man,
an industrious and thrifty rancher of San Ardo, who has been assiduously
courting the heroine of this little story for over a year. His name is
Edward DAVIS and his attentions were strongly opposed by the girl's
parents. When San Jose was reached, the trio alighted, a marriage license
was secured and a Justice of the Peace united 2 yearning, loving hearts.
Mr. DAVIS brought his bride to the city Tuesday and immediately
left for San Ardo to get his place newly fitted up for her reception upon
her return from visiting Miss HEALION at Tocaloma, on the line of
the North Pacific Coast Railroad, for which place she leaves this morning.
The "old folks" were informed of the marriage Thanksgiving Day, and were
furious at the disregard shown by their daughter for their expressed wishes.
They may relent possibly, andmake the best of what they consider a bad
bargain, but according to a friend of the family 'God bless you, my children'
and forgiveness will not be accorded the newly married pair by those 'at
home' at present." Source: The Salinas Weekly Index, 4 Dec 1890.

"DILLON/COOPER--Miss Alice
COOPER's
Marriage--The following account of the marriage of Miss Alice COOPER,
which we reproduce from the San Francisco 'Post'
of the 2nd inst.,
will be of interest to the many friends of that young lady in Monterey
County: Last evening at 9 o'clock, in the presence of their numerous friends,
at the residence of the bride's parents, 1926 Octavia street, Miss Alice
COOPER,
daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J.B.H.
COOPER, and Thomas
DILLON,
son of Mrs. N. DILLON, were united in the holy bonds of matrimony.
Rev. Father COTTLE performed the ceremony. The fair young bride
is a member of one of the old representative Spanish families of this coast.
In fact, she is a grandniece of the late General VALLEJO. Both of
the high contracting parties and their families are prominent members of
the catholic community. The house was simply and tastefully decorated for
the occasion with palms, ferns and flowers. The bride, a handsome, petite
brunette, looked very lovely in her bridal attire. The gown was of white
corded silk, fashioned empire style, with immense puffed sleeves. The back
was laid in Watteau folds, and fell in a great court train. The neck was
cut slightly decollete and filled in with mousseline de soie and duchesse
lace 150 years old. At each shoulder was a knot of orange blossoms and
lilies of the valley, which, intermingling with the rare old duchesse,
fell in a soft cascade down the side of the gown almost to the hem of the
jupe. A veil of silk tulle completed the lovely bridal attire, and was
fastened to the coiffure by a diamond star, the only ornament worn by the
bride, it being the gift of the groom. Miss Marie DILLON, sister
of the groom and maid of honor, looked very handsome in a dainty gown of
yellow crepe. Mr. & Mrs. DILLON were the recipients of very
many presents. From Mr. & Mrs. COOPER, the parents of the bride,
they received the handsome home on Sacramento street, adjoining the COOPER
residence. The house has been recently built and is elegantly furnished.
From Mrs. J.B.R. COOPER, the grandmother of the bride, they received
a magnificent chest of silver containing 150 pieces. Mrs. DILLON,
the mother of the groom, gave the happy couple a handsome solid silver
tea service. Mr. & Mrs. DILLON left this morning for a short
bridal trip. On their return they will occupy their new residence on Sacramento
street." Source: Salinas Weekly Index, 9 Feb 1893. Transcribed by
