"MANNING/STONE--Married on the Ocean -- [from the Monterey 'Argus'] -- "On Thanksgiving Day, a young couple arrived from Salinas, and after hunting up one of our divines, they explained to him that they had gone to Salinas from San Francisco to get married, forgetting that the day was a holiday and were therefore unable to procure a license. Determined, nevertheless, to get married anyhow, they got a carriage and came over here to be married out at sea. Everything seemed to be on the square, and nothing _oth [damaged], Rev. H.S. SNODGRASS consented to accompany them the necessary 3 miles out on the bay. After arriving at about the desired distance, the couple -- D.B. MANNING, of Santa Cruz, and Miss Annie STONE, of San Francisco -- were united in marriage, a friend by the name of BAKER being a witness." From the 'Index' -- There are several inaccuracies in the above

paragraph. Miss Annie STONE was a Salinas schoolgirl, not over 16 years of age and resided here with her mother. Her father is ex-Constable W.W. STONE, who is at present somewhere in the East. It is understood that MANNING is from San Francisco, instead of Santa Cruz. "All is well that ends well," and we hope the affair will end well." Source: The Salinas Weekly Index, 1 Dec 1887. "MANNING/STONE--The romantic marriage of Miss Annie STONE, of Salinas, and C.B. MANNING, of Santa Cruz, out at sea off Monterey, on the 24th of last November was onlychronicled in the 'Index' at the time. They went to San Francisco to live and were divorced a few days ago in that city. The next day after the divorce, Annie married C.H. COLBURN, the "mutual friend" who assisted at the elopement and first marriage and afterwards lived in the same house with MANNING and his bride." Source: Salinas Weekly Index, 23 Feb 1888. "MARAIS/MARAIS--In SAN FRANCISCO, Madame MARAIS has made application for divorce from her husband. She affirms that 3 weeks after marriage, he knocked her down and kicked her in the face; he afterwards struck and choked her, and attempted to smother her between 2 pillows and almost succeeded; after this, he kicked her out of bed. He also once threatened to buy a revolver and kill her; and after threatened her life on several occasions. These are sufficient reasons, we should judge, why a lady should request a divorce from her husband." Source: Stockton Daily Argus (Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA), 29 Dec 1860. Transcribed by Dee.

"MEACHAM/KANE--On Wednesday evening last, in San Francisco, George MEACHAM, youngest son of Alonzo MEACHAM, of Mark West Creek, surprised his friends by committing matrimony. The bride, Miss Elizabeth KANE, an accomplished young lady of the metropolis, was the cause of this act taken by the young farmer. George's friends congratulate him on the sensible step he has just taken and wish him a happy voyage over the raging billows of the sea of matrimony. Mr./Mrs. MEACHAM will return Monday and occupy their residence on the farm on Mark West Creek." Source: The Sonoma Democrat (Santa Rosa, CA), 7 Dec 1889. Transcribed by Jeanne Taylor.

"MEACHAM/TATE--On July 26th, 1850, Alonzo MEACHAM and Miss Sarah Jane TATE, were united in marriage in San Francisco. Since the early '50's the couple have resided in this county, being among the first settlers of Santa Rosa. For about 35 years they have resided on their beautiful farm on Mark West Creek, and Saturday afternoon, a few neighbors and friends resolved to tender them a surprise party in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of their wedding day. The programme was successfully carried out, and a jollier occassion has seldom been witnessed on the Creek. About 60 guests, including pioneers, neighbors, friends and relatives, assembled at the residence and created a surprise that was a surprise. After explanations were made and congratulations extended the party proceeded at once to the full enjoyment of the occassion. A few who were previously let into the secret had made complete provisions for refreshments and long tables for the accommodations of 75 visitors were spread under the shady oaks that surround the dwelling. Everything that could tempt the palate or satisfy the epicurean taste was provided in abundance. At the head of the table sat the bride and groom of 40 years ago, looking as happy and contented as in the days of yore, while on the sides were seated the olive branches of the union. Three sons and a daughter, now grown. After a pleasant hour at the dinner table the companions were entertained by the younger members of the assemblage, with musical and literary selections, in which Miss LaBOYD of Elk Grove and Miss Bertha HOEN of this city, took a prominent part. The affair was well managed throughout, and none seemed more pleased than Mr./Mrs. MEACHAM, who appeared well satisfied with the ovation and from every indication, bid fair to celebrate their diamond wedding. Among the guests present, besides members of the family were: Mr./Mrs. E.W. WOOLSEY; Mr./Mrs. Jefferson MADDUX; Mr/Mrs. Martin SLUSSER; Mr./Mrs. Will SLUSSER; Mr/Mrs. KNAPP; Mr/Mrs. Parker MADDUX; Mr./Mrs. Ramsey MADDUX; Mr/Mrs. POLHEMUS; Mr/Mrs. DORNING; Dr/Mrs. BOYCE & Judge BROWN

"MECUM/SNELL--A PRETTY WEDDING--Ira E. MECUM OF San Francisco Weds Pretty Mildred SNELL--The Fall River Tidings contains the following account of the wedding of Ira E. MECUM and Miss Mildred SNELL: A most charming home wedding was solemnized at the beautiful home of Mr. and Mrs. James H. SNELL, four miles south of Pittville, at high noon on Wednesday, June 12, 1901, the contracting parties being the only daughter, Mildred E. SNELL and Ira E. MECUM of San Francisco. Spacious parlors were in gay spring decorations of roses, carnations and white satin ribbon. The bower under which the bridal party stood was tastefully decorated in white silk, while a large mirror hung in the background. As the young couple walked to the sacred spot, they were preceded by the little flower girls, Alice MOSS and Wanda KING, cousins of the bride, and little Helen MARSHMAN as ring bearer. From each side of the bower of roses extended long white satin ribbons, attached to two baskets of lovely roses. The little flower girls each took a basket and stepped aside, leaving an opening through which the bride and groom passed. As the party stood beneath this handsome bower of roses, an artist could not have wished for a more beautiful subject than was reflected from the mirror as they stood waiting for the solemn words to be spoken. Rev. D. M. MARSHMAN, Pastor of the first Presbyterian Church was the officiating clergyman. Master Leo ROWLEY played Mendelssohn's wedding march, "Thou Art Mine," during the ceremony. After congratulations the guests were ushered into the beautifully decorated dining room to the notes of "I'd Leave My Happy Home For You," and seated to a sumptuous breakfast. The bride wore an exquisite gown of Point 'd Sprit over a white Peau de Sole. She was without veil and carried a bouquet of white carnations and ferns. She was one of the leading belles of Shasta and Lassen Counties, and has many, many friends, who wish her all the happiness in the world, and hope her life may ever be as joyous as it was today. The groom is one of the most promising businessmen of San Francisco. We all wish him all the success in life, but envy him for robbing us of one of our fairest daughters. The happy couple left at 2 o'clock p.m. for San Francisco. They expect to travel for a month, and on their return will be at home to their friends at 318 Golden Gate avenue, San Francisco. Only the relatives and most intimate friends of the bride were present. Mr. and Mrs. MECUM received a number of beautiful presents." Source: Big Valley Gazette (Bieber, Lassen County) 19 June 1901.
