"ROONEY/ROONEY--A CHURCH PASTOR SUED for
DIVORCE -- A suit was commenced on Saturday in the 12th District Court,
for a divorce from her husband by the wife of the Rev. Mr. ROONEY,
formerly of this city, but at present pastor of the Greenwich street church,
San Francisco. An application for alimony was also made during the pending
of the suit. A report of the case as given in the S.F. 'Bulletin' says:
"The affidavits of the wife and her friends, charge a systematic course
of cruelty on the part of her husband towards her, which ended in his finally
driving her from his house without either clothing or money; and that he
made the vilest charges against her character. "It also appears that her
father having been written to, sent $525 to her to pay their passages home.
The wife asks that her husband may be compelled to pay this money to her
for her support. This money Mr. ROONEY says he has loaned to the
Greenwich street church, of which he is pastor. "In the affidavits and
answer read on behalf of the husband, the reverend gentleman denies the
cruelty, but reiterates the charges against the character of his wife.
He also says that, notwithstanding all her ill conduct, he is willing to
take her back to his house and his bosom, but he is not willing or able
to pay any money for her support, which he thinks she is able to earn for
herself. "In proof of his inability to pay her anything, he alleges that
though he has been pastor of the Greenwich street church since October,
1856, he has only received in all that time the sum of $669.13, or about
$5 or $6 per week. The separation of the parties took place in November
last." Source: Weekly Stockton Democrat, 11 April 1858. Transcribed

Saturday, the jury in the case of Augusta ROONEY vs. Samuel M. ROONEY,

with ROONEY matters, to learn that Mrs. ROONEY comes out
so much ahead." Source: Weekly Stockton Democrat, 25

"RUTLEDGE/ERNST--At the M.E. Church on Bush
St., San Francisco, Monday afternoon, Thomas RUTLEDGE, Jr., of this
city, and Miss Carrie Z. ERNST, of Los Angeles, were made the happy
partners in a matrimonial contract. The ceremony was performed by Rev.
John Hannon, and was witnessed only by a few intimate friends and relatives.
But few of Tom's bachelor friends were admitted to his confidence in this
instance and the general feeling among his acquaintances will be one of
surprise. Tom is a young man of high intelligence and fine business qualifications
and success in his chosen profession of the law lacks only opportunity,
to become a reality. His wife, although not personally known to many in
this city, is a young lady of high social position and possesses accomplishments,
which, united with a warm and genial disposition are sufficient to insure
her husband a liberal share in life's happiness. Mr./Mrs. RUTLEDGE,
Jr. may confidently anticipate a fulfillment of the numerous wishes expressed
for their future joy and prosperity." Source: The Sonoma Democrat
