"WALLS/GERKINS--KEPT MARRIAGE SECRET DURING FIFTEEN MONTHS--MARYSVILLE (Yuba Co.), April 25 - The story of a secret marriage which took place in San Francisco fifteen months ago, and in which a highly esteemed Marysville young woman figured as bride, has just been made public. The news comes as a great surprise to the young wife's relatives here, as well as to her wide circle of friends and acquaintances. On January 14, 1904, Miss Elizabeth GERKIN became the wife of Captain William L. WALLS, the nuptial knot being tied by Rev. Father McQUADE, a close friend of the groom, through ties that were cemented during troublous times. William A. WALLS went to the Phillippines as Captain of one of the San Francisco volunteer companies, and as Chaplain in the same regiment went Father MCQUADE. Thus, when the young people had their secret to confide, they chose Father MCQUADE to perform the ceremony. Since his return from the Phillippines Captain WALLS has held a responsible position with the Railroad Company. He is to be congratulated upon his choice of a life partner, and Mrs. WALLS has the well wished of every one in Marysville. Accompanied by her husband, Mrs. WALLS will spend Carnival week in this city, at which time she can apologize for the surprise she sprung on every one." Source: Sacramento Evening Bee, 25 April 1905.
