This Register contains information on approximately 16,365 individual males. This would be approximately one-half of the over-21-male citizens of San Francisco in 1870. The following table shows the population figures from the 1870 census. Also, note that voting age at the time was 21, and women were not given the right to vote until 1911 in California.

Please note that this Great Register was originally divided into three sections under each alphabetical letter: (1) the principal list of registrations; (2) registrations after the printing of the principal list, and prior to July 1st, 1867; and, (3) names canceled after the printing of the preceding lists, and prior to July 1st, 1867. All three sections have been merged and sorted herein. Two columns of the original data have not been reproduced here: "No." (record number) and "Sworn" (whether they were sworn or something else). Finally, there was a short list of twelve names on a separate page labeled "Errata"; these corrections have been added to the modified list here. Below is the original text of the document for the first three pages. [Note that the "Number of Citizens" and "Number of Cancellations" stated below do not match the numbers that were found in this Register.]

An original copy of the book and a microfilm version is available at the San Francisco Public Library History Center.
